Affogato is an easy Italian coffee-based dessert that tastes so incredible. You’ll be surprised to learn it only has two ingredients and just takes seconds to make.
What is Affogato?
Affogato usually takes the form of a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream topped or “drowned” with a shot of hot espresso. The hot coffee starts to melt the ice cream and forms a thick foam on top. Simply put, if you are a coffee lover, this dessert is heaven in a glass.
With our travels to Italy currently on pause, I’m here to show you how to make the very best affogato at home (even if you don’t have an espresso machine!). Trust me: If you like the sound of sweet and creamy gelato mingling with the strong flavor of espresso, this dessert is the perfect treat for you.
Can I Add Toppings?
Of course you can add toppings! There is so much room to experiment with this dessert. Espresso and gelato comprise the traditional affogato, but if you’re feeling adventurous, try adding:
- Chocolate sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Sea salt
- Liquor, such as Bailey’s, Kahlua or Frangelico
- Toasted or chopped pistachios or hazelnuts
- Chocolate shavings
- Chocolate espresso beans
- Crushed Biscotti
