I first discovered Alabama White BBQ Sauce from the institution in Decatur, AL called Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q. They roast their famous smoked chicken and literally dunk the entire chicken into this homemade white BBQ sauce. The taste of this sauce on the smoked chicken will blow your mind. Not only does this sauce work with chicken, but it can also be used for other smoked meats such as turkey and goes great with grilled veggies.
If you love barbecue, you already know that there are lots of regional variations of BBQ sauces to enjoy, depending on what part of the country you are from. Kansas City BBQ is known for its thick, sweet sauce. North Carolina has a thin vinegar based sauce. and South Carolina BBQ sauce is mustard based.
But chances are, you’ve never heard of this tangy white barbecue sauce unless you’ve been to Alabama.
Alabama White BBQ Sauce has been around since 1925 after being created by Bob Gibson, the founder of Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q. His popular recipe for white BBQ sauce eventually spread to barbecue joints throughout the region.
This sauce starts with a mayonnaise base that is thinned out with a little vinegar, then gets a flavor kick from mustard, horseradish, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. I personally like my White BBQ sauce to have a kick of spice. If you’re like me, consider adding some Behrnes Habanero Pepper Salt to your sauce. Be conservative when adding this because a little will go a long way.
It’s ridiculously easy to make. You just whisk everything together in a bowl until smooth, then pour into a jar and refrigerate until you are ready to use it. It’s so simple, but is oh so good.
How long can the sauce be stored?
You can store the sauce in the refrigerator for up to five days. After that, you would get better results by making a fresh batch. But whenever we make it at our house, it doesn’t last very long!
