What is biltong, you may ask? It is a South African beef jerky and is so far superior to most jerky’s that you pick up at a convenient store when you need a snack for a long road trip. At the Biltong bar in Atlanta, one of their appetizers is Biltong popcorn which we had when we visited there and it was amazing! While we haven’t personally made biltong yet at home, we have tried recreating their recipe and used biltong that we purchased at a local South African store in Dallas, TX and it is definitely a great way to jazz up your regular old popcorn.
Biltong was originally created by Dutch pioneers who were traveling across South Africa. They needed a reliable food source as they made their way across the continent and although it looks similar to American beef jerky, it is quite different in flavor and the method of preparation.
I keep hoping that the Biltong Bar will expand to Dallas so I can buy their biltong directly and fresh and experiment with this delicious protein with a variety of other dishes!
